Getting Political

Last night I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Tony's downtown, the only 5 star restaurant in Saint Louis to my knowledge. The food was to die for and the ambiance was very chic...What was the big occasion? A presentation from a drug rep company regarding a safety initiative I am working on at work. It was informative and a great way to make new contacts and strengthen existing relationships, but on my way to work today I got to thinking about how expensive it must have been to wine and dine over 50 physicians and healthcare workers at such a top notch restaurant. Last Tuesday I attended another big pharma led, wine and dine dinner at Maggiano's through an advanced nursing practice organization I belong to. Again, it's amazing the type of money these drug companies put into these educational "meetings" which are more about socializing than sharing information. Some co-workers of mine attended a super nice restaurant on The Hill last week for yet another drug rep led dinner...
So while I was driving to work and listening to my conservative talk radio, hearing all about the new government run panel deciding to increase the age of mammography screening for woman from age 40 to age 50, my blood literally started to boil. Breast cancer effects 1 in 8 women in the United States, it does not make any sense to increase the screening age when so many people's lives are saved due to the early detection screenings which "were" considered standard here in America. Our survival rate for breast cancer is so much better than other countries BECAUSE of our early detection! I don't like to get political on my family blog, but I just had to share these thoughts and ask this question regarding the attempt at government controlling healthcare and placing caps on what is covered and what is not....
WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT MAKING "CUTS" THAT ULTIMATELY COST WOMEN THEIR LIVES WHEN BIG PHARMA IS SPENDING ALL OF THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THEY MAKE ON THINGS LIKE FANCY DINNERS ALL BECAUSE THEY CHARGE TOO MUCH FOR MEDICATIONS???
Maybe this is a preview of what is to come with the "government run healthcare plan".... scared yet? I sure am!

Amen sister!

Until just recently, my health insurance as a public school teacher covered 0% of ANY wellness checks, pap smears, mamograms, prostate screenings, etc. Not only did it cover 0% of the cost, these crucial and life-saving tests did not even apply towards our deductible. It was ridiculous. Thankfully it has changed in the last two years and now wellness checks are 100% paid for (up to $300)... BUT we did not receive a raise that year (the staff was given a choice between the wellness check money or a raise). Crazy!
