7 Super Spices and My Green Thumb

There are some perks to working in a hospital... last week the Food and Nutrition gals offered a Lunch and Learn that was open to all hospital employees. It was about 7 Super Spices: Oregano, Red Peppers, Thyme, Rosemary, Ginger, Yellow Curry, and Cinnamon! I found it very informative and ended up being so inspired by my new found knowledge about the health benefits of spices, that I decided to try growing some myself.... One of the main points I took away from the lunch session was that fresh herbs are A LOT better for you than dried. The oils in the herbs are where most of the health benefits are from, so to support my long time theory: FRESH IS ALWAYS BETTER!

After telling my mom all about the health benefits of these spices (there are too many to even start blogging about, if interested there is tons of information on the internet), she must have been inspired as well because she bought all of the needed items for me to give my not so green thumbs their first chance at growing something. To some people this may not seem like a big deal, but I seriously have never managed to keep a plant alive for more than 2 months. After taking my pharmacology exam and feeling pretty good about it, I decided to go ahead and plant my little seeds! Below is my supply line-up... don't you like how I used measuring cups for potting? After I finished I remembered that I do have a miniature gardening kit that I got from our wedding... ooops!

The finished product! If my herb garden ever becomes a success, I found some adorable name tags to put in the soil from Pottery Barn... as of right now, only I know how to identify which pot has what herb in it!
DID YOU KNOW???? Dried herbs and spices only have a 6 month shelf life!

Kim,

I grow my own herbs too... it is so fun. And don't worry about identifying them, when they start to come up you can usually tell by the taste or smell and then can label them- I learned that one the hard way!

Happy Gardening!
