Contractions Happen...

Things got pretty exciting on Friday while I was at work. I had a really busy assignment and one of my patients was every bit of 300 pounds and required a bedpan or repositioning at least every 30 minutes. So by noon, when I was grabbing my belly every 15 minutes I started to wonder what was going on. My first thought was not contractions, but after 2 hours of my co-workers convincing me that I was having contractions I believed them. My belly would get all tight and other people could even feel it, so once I convinced myself I was having contractions I started to keep track of them. I was having one every 7-10 minutes and starting to get anxious... I couldn't decide if I should go home or keep working, I couldn't decide if I should call Bryan (he was in a wedding and I didn't want him to feel like he needed to leave), and I couldn't decide if I should call my doctor. Pretty much, I was the most indecisive I have ever been... then my friend Jen got ahold of her sister who is an OB nurse. She said I needed to try eating, drinking, and taking a little rest. I managed to do those three things for about 10 minutes and my contractions slowed down to every 30 minutes! So I had no problems finishing my day at work!
After work I hurried to Candice and Donnie's wedding reception, which was gorgeous! Its was definatly a winter wonderland... I was still having contractions and my friend Anne, who I was sitting next to, cracked me up when she said, "don't let your water break on my shoes!" She had on some adorable fuzzy zebra Guess heels so I completely understood where she was coming from! ha ha.

Apparently these contractions just happen. They are not braxton hicks because they are regularly spaced. Jen's sister said this can go on for weeks and these contractions do not mean you are in labor, but they can put you in labor if you don't take the necessary steps to make them go away. A lot of physical activity can bring them on, which is what happens when you take care of a 300 pound patient. They ended up going completely away by midnight or so, but then on Saturday while we were walking the mall I started having them again and they were about 20 minutes apart!
It is all so exciting to me because Emme is now full term and could safely arrive anytime. I feel like crap and would love for her to come soon. I'm so over the swelling, which has gotten so much worse these last 2 days and I have been feeling like I am going to get sick. As exciting as these early signs of labor and contractions are, I am a little nervous about heading off to work tomorrow morning! Going into actual labor at work is not what I pictured at all, but we shall see! My official last day before maternity leave is this Wednesday!
Like my mother in law said, Emme will come when she is good and ready!

Kim,
Unfortunately Jed & I were in the same boat! I started having contractions about 3 weeks ahead of time as well. After every doctor's appointment we walked the mall. You know what finally did it? Riding a motorcycle! Anyway Jess and I are really anxious to see what the newest princess will look like and can't wait to see what awesome parents you will be! Talk to you soon and tell Bry not to forget to call us when you go.
Love you both!
